We believe that the Eye Care is integral part of Medical Profession and we further believe that the eye cars is a fast developing profession which maintains its nability in all respects. We also believe that eye care personnel who are prepared to give comprehensive eye care are important members of health care team.
Optometry & Opthalmic Sciences
Optometry is a Para professional subject for primary eye care. It includes visual system check up required for refractive errors estimation. It also covers the production and supply of optical aids including spectacles, contact lenses. Blindness is a major public health problem in india and according to WHO there are about 10 million blind and visually disabled, nearly 80% of the blindness can be prevented if there are adequate number of vision care professionals for Right to Sight programme in India. The programme would train several people working at Eye Care hospitals and centers. It would give them an opportunity to provide upgraded primary eyecare services to needy people particulaty in the community. "Vision 2023" Right to Sight and National programme for control of blindness (NPCB) commitment to eliminate avoidable blindness by the year 2022, there is urgent need of 75000 vision care professionals to establish vision centers at primary eye care level in India.
Maharashtra Institute of Optometry & Hospital is run by MAEER Trust Pune-prestigious institute & body of international repute. Currently MIO is running B.Sc Optometry course with an intake capacity of 20 students & Diploma in Optometry Course with an intake capacity of 20 students.
A unique air conditioned library with Internet facilities, highly qualified and competent faculty and dedicated and devoted supporting staff are the other features. We have ‘A’ Grade accreditation by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and ISO 9001:2015 certification makes MIO qualitatively different from other institutes in the state.
Various outreach programs such as organization of multidiagnostic camps, health awareness programs, health surveys by students in surrounding rural areas etc, help students gain knowledge, develop comprehensive health attitudes, values and imparts necessary skills.

Optometry is a primary health care profession in eye care. Optometrists are specialists trained to examine the eyes, diagnose diseases, and manage visual disorders by prescribing spectacles, contact lenses, low visual devices, and eye exercises. A detailed eye examination can also reveal systemic conditions like high blood pressure, anaemia , or diabetes. Optometrists make a diagnosis and refer the patients to the respective specialists for further care and management. They also co manage conditions with ophthalmologists and other health care professionals.
